Dobar dan (good day) / Bok (informal hi)
How locals say hello in Dubrovnik
May–June or September–October (warm, fewer crowds than July–August)
Walk the city walls at opening time (8 AM) to beat the cruise ship crowds. The Old Town is pedestrian-only — wear comfortable shoes on the marble Stradun which gets slippery when wet.
Dubrovnik was founded as Ragusa by refugees fleeing the destruction of the Roman city of Epidaurum (modern Cavtat) by Avar and Slav raids in 614 AD. They settled on a rocky island separated from the mainland by a shallow channel — that channel was later filled to become the Stradun, the main street of today's Old Town. For centuries the Republic of Ragusa was a formidable maritime power, rival to Venice, and masterly diplomatic tactician — maintaining independence by playing Ottoman, Habsburg, and Spanish powers against each other. Its motto 'Libertas' (Freedom) still appears on the city flag.
Dubrovnik was the first state in the world to officially abolish the slave trade — in 1416, over 400 years before the British Empire. The city-republic of Ragusa prided itself on freedom ('Libertas') above all.
