Roman forces built a bridge across the Thames in 43 CE and established Londinium as a supply hub. Within 17 years it was the province's largest city โ until Queen Boudica of the Iceni tribe burned it to the ground in 60 CE, an act so total that archaeologists can still identify its ash layer beneath modern London. The Romans rebuilt it grander than before, and the outline of its walls still shapes central London's street plan today.
