Origin Story

Ancient
📅 Founded 1873 (unified); Roman Aquincum circa 89 CEOriginally Aquincum (Roman) / Buda and Pest (medieval)By Roman legions; unified by the Austro-Hungarian government

Two separate cities — Buda on the hilly west bank of the Danube and the flat commercial Pest on the east — were formally merged on November 17, 1873. Buda's Castle Hill has been fortified since Celtic times and the Romans built their provincial capital Aquincum here in 89 CE. Devastated by Mongol invasion in 1241 and Ottoman occupation from 1541 to 1686, it rebuilt grander each time, emerging in the late 19th century as one of Europe's most lavishly architected capitals.

Fun Fact

Budapest was two separate cities — Buda and Pest — until 1873 when they merged with Óbuda.
