The Haudenosaunee and Anishinaabe peoples had lived at this Lake Ontario site for thousands of years. British Lieutenant Governor Simcoe established Fort York here in 1793 and named it York. American forces burned it to the ground in 1813 — the most significant US military action on Canadian soil. Renamed Toronto in 1834, it grew through waves of immigration into what surveys consistently rank as the world's most ethnically diverse city.
