Local Tip

Nairobi has the world's only national park within a city โ€” you can see lions with the skyline behind them.

Origin Story

Modern
๐Ÿ“… Founded 1899Originally Enkare Nairobi (Maasai: cool waters)By British East Africa Protectorate, as Railway Mile 327 camp

Nairobi was born from a railway camp. In 1899, the British Uganda Railway โ€” nicknamed the Lunatic Express โ€” reached Mile 327 and workers stopped to resupply at a Maasai spring called Enkare Nairobi, cool waters. The British decided to make it a depot, and within eight years it was the colonial capital of British East Africa โ€” one of the only major cities on Earth not established on an ancient settlement or natural harbour, but purely because of a train schedule.

Fun Fact

Nairobi is Africa's Silicon Savannah โ€” it's the tech startup capital of the continent, home to M-Pesa (mobile money used by 96% of Kenyans).
