Local Tip

Hefei's most rewarding cultural site is the Li Hongzhang Former Residence (李鸿章故居) — a magnificent Huizhou-style compound that illuminates the life of China's most important 19th-century statesman. The Baohe Park around Baohe Tower on Nanfei River is a genuine local escape, far from tourist infrastructure. Anhui Provincial Museum has one of China's best bronze collections from the Shang and Zhou dynasties.

Origin Story

Ancient
📅 Founded 202 BC (Han dynasty settlement); provincial capital status from Tang dynastyOriginally Luzhou (庐州) — from the ancient Lu commandery; became Hefei (合肥) from the merging of the Fei River tributariesBy Han dynasty administrative settlement at the convergence of the Dongfei and Nanfei rivers

Hefei's location at the convergence of the Fei River tributaries made it strategically vital for controlling the middle Yangtze region. The area saw numerous battles during the Three Kingdoms period (220–280 AD) — the Battle of Xiaoyaojin (215 AD) where Wei general Zhang Liao famously defeated a much larger Wu army is still celebrated locally. Hefei served as a regional capital under the Tang, Song, and Ming dynasties and was the birthplace of Bao Zheng (999–1062 AD), the incorruptible Song dynasty judge whose integrity became a symbol of justice in Chinese culture. The city's modern transformation began in 1952 when it was designated capital of the newly reorganised Anhui Province. The founding of the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) here in 1969 — after it was evacuated from Beijing during the Cultural Revolution — planted the seed of Hefei's extraordinary scientific ecosystem.

Fun Fact

Hefei is known as 'Science Island' (科学岛) — home to the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Institute of Plasma Physics, which operates EAST (Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak), the world's most advanced nuclear fusion reactor. In 2023 EAST achieved 403 seconds of plasma at 120 million°C — breaking the world record for sustained nuclear fusion. China's quantum communication satellite network is also managed from Hefei.

Cultural Dos

  • Visit the Anhui Provincial Museum for the bronze and Huizhou architecture collections
  • Walk the Binhu Wetland Park on Chaohu Lake at dawn for migratory bird watching (October–March)
  • Try the local baijiu — Gujing Gongjiu (古井贡酒) from nearby Bozhou is one of China's eight great liquors

Cultural Don'ts

  • Confuse Hefei with the surrounding Huizhou cultural region — Hefei is a modern industrial capital, not a preserved ancient town
  • Skip the lakeside districts — Chaohu Lake (China's fifth-largest freshwater lake) is beautiful and largely undiscovered by tourists
  • Underestimate the city's research culture — Hefei has more Nobel Prizes per capita (through USTC alumni) than any other Chinese city
