Origin Story

Medieval
๐Ÿ“… Founded 1411By Sultan Ahmad Shah I of the Gujarat Sultanate

Legend says Sultan Ahmad Shah I was encamped on the Sabarmati River banks in 1411 when he saw a rabbit turn on and chase a hunting dog โ€” taking it as an omen that even the weak become strong here. He named his new capital Ahmedabad after himself. The city grew into one of India's great textile centres, and Mahatma Gandhi chose it as his base for the independence campaign, launching the Dandi Salt March from his Sabarmati Ashram in 1930. In 2017 it became India's first UNESCO World Heritage City.
