Zhengzhou is the gateway to both the Shaolin Temple (少林寺, 80 km west) and the Yellow River scenic area. The Shaolin Temple monks perform live kung fu demonstrations daily — buy tickets in advance and go early to avoid the worst of the tour groups. The Yellow River passes 30 km north of the city — the cradle of Chinese civilisation for 5,000 years.
